All you have to do is drink a thicker smoothie packed with fiber-rich foods, according to a new research study appeared in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. The participants in the study have reported that they had felt fuller after drinking a thicker Green Smoothie when compared to them when they drank thin shake with five times as many calories.

The research study included around 15 participants who are young healthy and lean men according to Keri Gans, RDN, author of The Small Change Diet. She however told, “We can’t really draw major conclusions when we’re looking at such a sample size.”
A research study from Wageningen University in the Netherlands which has asked its participants to consume one of four dairy-based shakes that were varied in calories content, thicker and thinner consistencies, although all drinks included 50% carbs, 20% proteins, and 30% fats. The participants were made to consume the drink after fasting for three hours. Their stomachs were then scanned for every 10 minutes for the next 90 minutes in an MRI scanner. The study has also examined their appetite levels every10 minutes.

According to the findings, the thin 100-calorie shake had the lowest gastric emptying time around 30 minutes, which means it left the stomach faster than the other shakes. The thin shake was followed by thick 100-calorie shake around 40 minutes, and then the thin 500-calorie shake about 70 minutes. The 500 Calorie thick consistency smoothie was however the slowest to leave the stomach in about 82 minutes.

The researchers found that the Thickness and thinness had little outcome on the gastric emptying time. But it did account for the fullness and the participants who have consumed thick consistency smoothies felt fuller for longer time than the thin 500-calorie shake.

The findings however don’t give any advice on what you should consume or should not consume. . “A smoothie is great if you put the right ingredients in [it],” Gans said. You can top the smoothie with Greek yogurt or peanut butter that packs lots of proteins and makes you full for longer.
