The Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun: Rice + Probiotics Sunscreen is a chemical sunscreen that comes in a 50ml tube and is wonderful to apply to the skin.
The official website describes Rice + Probiotics sunscreen as “a lightweight and creamy organic sunscreen that feels comfortable on the skin and has the finish of a light moisturizer.”
Starting with the basics, Rice + Probiotics sunscreen contains brightening, soothing, and moisturizing ingredients that make it suitable for sensitive, dry, and irritated skin.
Some of the key ingredients are brightening and barrier-enhancing niacinamide, soothing green tea and ginseng extracts, moisturizing propanediol and glycerin, and 30% rice bran extract, an ingredient used in cosmetics to soften, repair, and nourish the skin.
In addition, several fermented ingredients such as pumpkin and soybean extracts help to soften and smooth the skin and restore the skin’s barrier function.
This tells me that the brand really cares about the feel and user experience as well as the skincare aspect of the product and is a lot more advanced in that regard, especially when you compare it to some drugstore sunscreens like Bioderma and La Roche-Posay.
As for key UV filters, Rice + Probiotics sunscreen uses four next-generation chemical filters found in Korean and some European skincare brands.
Here is the breakdown of the UV filters used in this sunscreen:
- Uvinul A Plus protects against UVA rays. It is stable and studies show that only a minimal amount is absorbed into the skin.
- UVinul T 150 specially protects against UVB rays. It’s incredibly stable and only a tiny percentage is needed to provide high SPF protection.
- Tinosorb M reflects and absorbs both UVA and UVB rays. Like all other next generation filters, it is photostable and can even help stabilize other ingredients. It also does not penetrate the skin, but can sometimes leave a white tinge, similar to mineral filters such as zinc oxide.
- iscotrizinol or Uvasorb HEB protects against UVB and some UVA rays. Excellent for waterproof formulas, it only loses 10% of its protective ability after 25 hours.
Rice + Probiotics sunscreen has no added fragrance and the product has no noticeable odor.
Rice + Probiotics sunscreen has a smooth, lotion-like texture due to its gentle, soothing and cosmetically elegant ingredients.
It’s not heavy, glides beautifully over the skin, leaving a velvety layer with minimal shine.
While those with dry skin will likely find this sunscreen fantastic because it penetrates the skin without leaving anything behind, those with extremely oily skin like me will likely notice some shine coming through as the day progresses.
Depending on the products you use underneath, this may not be immediately apparent, but you’ll definitely see it if you wear makeup over it or just use it over your moisturizer.
Well, the texture of the Rice + Probiotics sunscreen is definitely light, so the shine doesn’t necessarily bother me, as the product itself doesn’t feel suffocating on the skin like some silicone-based sunscreens like the Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen do.
So if you have oily skin and are looking for a sunscreen that doesn’t leave your skin greasy or weighed down and you don’t mind that extra glow, this is definitely something to consider.
