Checking out the latest go-to fad diets and eliminating gluten foods from your kids’ diet? Well, it may be better if your child has celiac disease (CD) or allergic to gluten, else it totally can have negative effect on their health rather than any benefits.
Researchers have shown that few sections of people for no reason are opting for the gluten-free diet, and this may show negative consequences on their health. A research study published in Journal of Pediatrics have taken about 1,500 Americans as participants to their study who claimed “no specific reason” as common explanation for adopting a gluten-free lifestyle to their kids.
The study author r. Norelle R. Reilly from New York-Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center stated that few parents with too much of consciousness over their kids health are opting for gluten-free diet without consulting the dieticians or health experts.
“Out of concern for their children’s health, parents sometimes place their children on a gluten-free diet in the belief that it relieves symptoms, can prevent CD, or is a healthy alternative without prior testing for CD or consultation with a dietitian,” Reilly said.
There are misconceptions among many that gluten-free diet is a healthy lifestyle choice with no disadvantages. However, it is to be noticed that in individuals without CD or wheat allergy, there are no such health benefits proven. In fact, it may increase the calorie intake, lead to nutritional deficiencies, and obscure an actual diagnosis of CD.
The other misconception of gluten is that it is toxic, but there are no proven theories. Researchers reveal that a gluten-free diet is not necessary to be incorporated for healthy first-degree relatives of individuals with CD or for healthy infants who are at risk of CD.
While a gluten-free diet can aid in better health and an improved quality of life among adults, it however has no evidences to show positive impact on children without a verified diagnosis of CD or wheat allergy. It could in fact pose more health threat than benefits, due to the potential nutritional deficiencies and quality of life issues.
“Parents should be counseled as to the possible financial, social, and nutritional consequences of unnecessary implementation of a gluten-free diet,” Dr. Reily added. Healthcare providers and dieticians can play a vital role in educating patients and parents on the kids nutrition and foods.
