6 Natural Remedies for Nasal Congestion

Nasal congestion or nasal blockage or nasal obstruction, or it is generally referred as blocked nose can be one of the common problems you face. It’s caused due to the blockage to airflow in and out of your nose, and the reasons for this are the build up of mucus, swelling in the nose, sinusitis or allergies.

While it may be a common problem with any seasonal changes, the blocked nose can lead to some serious woes like Tiredness, ear infection, or sinus problems. It can also be deadly to the newborns.

Although there are lot of over-the-counter medicines, the natural home remedies can help you get rid of a stuffy nose faster.

1. Humidifier

Humidifiers provide quick relief from the nasal blockage or the sinus pain. The humidifier can convert the water to moist air that fills your room, increasing the humidity in a room. The moist air in the room eases the irritated nose tissues and swollen blood vessels. They quickly aid in clearing the fluids of your nose and return your breathing to normal.

2. Hot Soups or Spicy Foods

Hot soups, especially Tomato soups and spicy foods give an instant relief from nasal congestion. They relieve symptoms of cold and flu, and boost the immune system. Tomatoes have anti-inflammatory properties, and thus is a good remedy for nasal congestion. Spicy foods have mucous-thinning properties, be it Chili pepper, black pepper, curry spices, garlic, ginger all can relieve you by draining out your blocked nose.

3. Inhaling Steam with Eucalyptus Oil

Inhaling steam alone is the best remedy for the blocked nose, and when you add the natural decongestant like the eucalyptus oil, it doubles the ability of faster relief. Use a pot of steaming water, add few drops of peppermint oil or eucalyptus oil or some Vicks VapoRub and inhale the steam twice or thrice a day. It helps thin the mucus in your nasal passages, draining out the fluids and decreasing the pressure in your sinuses. Alternatively, pour few drops of Eucalyptus oil on a handkerchief and inhale it.

4. Stay Hydrated

Keep drinking the fluids, when your nose is stuffed up. All the liquids including water, sports drinks, Orange juices, herbal teas help you keep hydrated and ease the pain and discomfort from nasal congestion. The lesser the pressure is, the lesser will be the inflammation, discomfort and irritation. Prefer soups and warm teas, when the Nasal Congestion is accompanied by Sore throat.

5. Onions

Eating raw onions, considered as natural decongestants can provide temporary relief to the blocked noses. Onions, with its anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties can lessen congestion, thereby relieving you stuffed nose. Smell a raw onion for 4-5 minutes, or include onions in soups and salads to help you to get some good results.

6. Saline Water

Saline solution, salt mixed with warm water is the best way to get rid of the nasal blockage. In fact, it is highly recommended by doctors. With the help of a dropper, pour few drops of saline solution in nostrils, and when it enters nasal passage, it drains out the water from your swollen membranes. It reduces inflammation and thereby gets rid of the nasal congestion.
