Canker sores or Apthous stomatitis or Mouth Ulcers are formed inside of the mouth, tongue, lips, or throat, and are caused due to the inflammatory conditions, food allergies, injuries, viral infections, stress, excessive smoking, hereditary factors or certain drugs like Anemia. However, they are not contagious and not to be mistaken with cold sores or blisters.
Canker Sores cause pain, burning sensation, swollen lymph nodes and fever. While they can be treated with over-the-counter medications, topical medications or mouth washes, there are also natural home remedies to effectively treat Canker Sores.
1. Coconut Oil
The Anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial properties in Coconut oil can help in getting rid of canker sores, and it’s a safe remedy to opt for. With a cotton swab, dab few drops of coconut oil onto the sore in the form of thick layer. Alternatively, you can mix half teaspoon of beeswax with coconut oil to thicken the texture.
Honey can be used as first aid on burns, scalds and canker sores too. It reduces the pain, redness and prevents them from forming blisters. The anti-bacterial properties in honey promote tissues growth and aids in healing. Clean the sore clean with a sterile cotton ball after a meal, and apply a small amount of honey.
3. Aloevera Gel
Aloevera speeds the healing process of canker sore and aids in soothing the pain, thanks to its the anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and curative properties. Slice Aloe Vera leaf and extract the gel. Apply the gel on canker sore area twice or thrice a day. Alternatively, rinse your mouth with fresh aloe vera juice for best results.
4. Baking Soda
Baking Soda neutralizes acids and heals the sore quickly and kills the bacteria. You can add baking soda directly on to the canker sore, or swish out the baking soda mixed water, three times in an hour before going to bed.
5. Chamomile Tea Bag
Chamomile Tea Bag contains chemical compounds called bisabolol, or levomenol that may help relieve pain, and speed up healing process. The tea bags will neutralize acids that irritate the sore and relieve pain. Place damp Chamomile Tea Bag on the sore for 5-10 minutes twice daily, and it speeds up the healing.
6. Clove Oil
Clove oil contains potent painkiller eugenol which helps ease the painful ulcers or the canker sores, or even the toothaches. It is packed with anti-fungal, anti-septic, antibacterial, and antiviral properties that can kill bacteria, reduce toothaches, oral pain and puffiness. Mix 4 -5 drops of clove essential oil to a spoon of olive oil. Dab the mix with cotton swab and apply it on the sore, and let it stay for five minutes.
