In life, we need motivation to achieve our goals. According to Psychology Today, “Motivation is one of the driving forces behind human behavior.” Having motivation can help a person reach new heights. While its absence can push a person to the very bottom.

What is motivation?

As Kendra Cherry of Very Well Mind defined, motivation is “the process that initiates, directs, and maintains goal-directed behavior.” This means that motivation is what motivates a person to do something and is the reason why a person does something.

Two types of motivation

There are two types of motivation that differ in the source of a person’s motivation. It can be internal or external.

intrinsic motivation

Intrinsic motivation comes from the person himself. They don’t complete a task just because of rewards, punishment avoidance, deadlines, or pressure from outside. They are forced to do something for their own personal satisfaction. The reward a person gets from completing a task is the joy of doing it. For example, playing games for fun.

External motivation

External motivation comes from outside. They are motivated to complete a task in order to receive an extrinsic reward or to avoid any unwanted outcomes. According to Victor Vroom’s Expectancy Theory, three elements are necessary for the success of an extrinsic motivator:

  • Valence – A person’s desire for a promised result or reward.
  • Expectation – The person’s belief that his extra efforts will help him achieve the desired results.
  • Instrumentality – A person’s belief that once he achieves the desired result or result, he will be given a reward.

Why do I need motivation?

As stated earlier, motivation is the driving force behind human action. Without motivation, a person will be unproductive and it will be difficult for him to get things done and finish. They don’t have goals to aim for.

Sometimes a break is needed to work normally again. This can cause you mental and/or physical stress that will affect your motivation to complete the task. Rest will help clear your mind and energize you to work again.

Use positive reinforcement

It’s nice to know that you’re not alone in getting things done, especially if it’s difficult to complete. It’s also helpful to hear approval from other people to help keep you motivated.

Select the goals you are interested in

You are more likely to stay motivated if you do what interests you. Doing what others dictate or against your will will quickly lose interest.

In addition to motivating yourself, you must also help others with their motivation. You alone cannot do such a huge thing without the help of other people. When you motivate others, you will be able to achieve your goals faster.

Let them see the big picture

You tell them how their contributions affect you and help you reach your goals. Give them the opportunity to see the bigger picture so they understand that what they do matters.

Trust their abilities

Letting them do what they want without being told is the best way to show other people that you trust them. If they know they are trusted, it boosts their morale and motivates them to act on their own initiative.

Appreciate what they do

You show appreciation for them by praising them and thanking them for a job well done. You can also share positive feedback about them with other people.
